Human-like sk!n teddy bear: Authorities, locals panic over eerie discovery in California; shocking twist follows(Photo)
Panic erupted outside a California convenience store this past weekend after a disturbing teddy bear, resembling stitched human skin, was discovered abandoned — but authorities say it was no crime scene, just a very creepy prank.
On Sunday, July 13, the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department responded to a report of what appeared to be human remains outside an AMPM gas station in the 13600 block of Bear Valley Road, Victorville. "A coroner investigator has taken possession of the object, and the investigation is continuing," police spokesperson Mara Rodriguez told NBC4 Los Angeles.
Footage from KTLA showed the store’s parking lot cordoned off while officials examined what initially sparked fear of a gruesome crime — only to later confirm it was a highly realistic latex teddy bear sold online as a horror prop.
South Carolina artist Robert Kelly, the creator behind the bizarre bear, told PEOPLE that the item came from his company Dark Seed Creations, which specializes in horror props for haunted attractions and collectors. "Our work is pretty easily recognizable... I looked and sure enough, it was the bear I sent out last week," Kelly said.
Kelly clarified that he had “no knowledge of the [buyer’s] intentions” and added on Facebook, “No I did not have any knowledge of the prank... anyone can still order the bear online.”
Despite its realism, the $165 bear is fully made of latex. “I don’t know if the guy broke any laws or if it was just a prank, but it looks like he definitely got some people riled up,” Kelly added to ABC7 Eyewitness News.
